BLACKBIRD

MALE

DAILY

RESIDENT

The Blackbird (Turdus merula)

Family - Turdidae. Chats and Thrushes.

Length - 24 to 25cm. Wingspan - 34 to 38cm. Weight - 80 to 100g. Lifespan - Up to 5 years.

Conservation Status - Secure.

Seen - All year round in gardens, woods and countryside from coasts to hills.

Eats - Insects, worms, fruit and berries.

Nests - A cup built of grass and mud from March to August in a hedge or shrub. 3 - 5 eggs. 2 - 4 broods.

A smart plump Thrush (especially the black male) with a distinctive habit of raising its tail on landing. The Blackbird is a familiar garden bird, the glossy black male with orange-yellow beak and eye ring is easy to recognise, but the dark brown female often with spots and streaks on their breast could be confused with other thrushes. The males song has been described as the finest of all British Thrushes, extremely varied, complex, and with little repetition.

FOCUS ON THE BIRD

The BlackCAP (Sylvia atricapilla)

Family - Sylviidae. Warblers and Allies.

Length - 13cm. Wingspan - 20 to 23cm. Weight - 14 to 20g. Lifespan - Up to 5 years.

Conservation Status - Secure.

Seen - All year round in bushy gardens, woods, parks and countryside with plenty of thick undergrowth from coasts to hills.

Eats - Insects from foliage and a variety of soft berries, especially elder.

Nests - A small cup built of grass and stems from April to July in a bush. 4 - 5 eggs. 2 broods.

One of the more common Sylvia warblers with a beautiful, rich, full throated song and typically hard unmusical warbling calls.
